Taking your children to Africa can certainly be challenging at the best of times, so this article looks into what is recommended for children of all ages.
Infants – Aged 0-1
The most severe issue that people face when deciding to travel with their kids to Africa is the fact that the majority of the continent is rife with malaria. Infants of this age are far too young to be taking anti-malarial drugs and it’s therefore better taking them to a malaria free zone such as the Eastern cape in South Africa or the islands of the Seychelles.
Small Children – Aged 2-5
An issue that is still of major concern at this age is the child’s lack of ability to regulate their own body temperature. On a positive however they are at the age now where they are able to take anti-malarial drugs which opens up the possibility of now taking them on Kenya safaris , Botswana Safaris and most other safaris on the continent. The majority of lodges allow children of this age whilst also allowing them at a reduced rate. The only issue with a lot of lodges is that they will more than likely refuse to take the children on safari.
Children – Aged 6-12
At this age all children are able to go on safari, so look out for some of the best options in Manyara or the Serengeti. The majority of camps throughout Africa will accept children and at a much lower cost. The only issue is that many children of this age are still not allowed on safaris unless they are private tours which can prove too expensive for most people
Teenagers – Aged 13-18
Lodges and camps all over Africa will accept teenagers but in many countries such as Zambia & Botswana they will charge you full price. It’s important to take into consideration that teenagers like to do their own thing when they are away whether that’s climbing Mt Kilimanjaro or just relaxing by themselves on the beach in Zanzibar. This is one of the best opportunities you can spend with your children, exploring new activities and new surroundings… it’s something you will never forget.
